ISLAMABAD: Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has said that the levy on petrol and diesel does not come under his ministry’s control, adding that questions regarding it should be directed to the relevant authorities.
Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, the minister said that energy supplies are being prioritised to meet electricity generation and fertiliser production needs. He noted that fuel requirements for power generation increase during the summer season due to higher demand for electricity.
He further stated that gas supply for fertiliser production will also be ensured to maintain agricultural output and support farmers.
Responding to questions about petroleum levy targets, the minister said the levy does not go to his ministry and declined responsibility for its allocation.
Earlier, officials from the Petroleum Division briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, addressing concerns about possible shortages of petroleum products in the country.
During the session, Ali Pervaiz Malik clarified that international commitments with the IMF set the petrol and diesel levy at Rs80 per litre, which must be met. He also said petroleum stocks are maintained by oil companies and that the government is planning to deregulate petrol and diesel pricing.
He added that detailed data from oil companies will be shared with the committee, while investigations into related matters are also being reviewed by the FIA.
