WASHINGTON: A US Congressman has praised Pakistan’s leadership for its role in diplomatic efforts linked to ceasefire discussions between Iran and the United States, according to a letter seen by officials.
Jack Bergman, a member of the US House of Representatives and co-chair of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for what he described as an “essential” contribution to back-channel diplomacy between Washington and Tehran.
In a letter dated 15 May addressed to the Pakistani leadership, Bergman said Pakistan had played a constructive and leading role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States, making use of its “unique position” to support diplomatic engagement at a sensitive time.
He expressed particular appreciation for what he called the “strategic judgement” shown by Pakistan’s leadership, adding that Islamabad had demonstrated “genuine wisdom” in helping create space for negotiations amid regional tensions.
The letter also conveyed personal gratitude to both the Prime Minister and the military leadership, with Bergman noting that Pakistan’s involvement had been instrumental in supporting communication channels during a fragile phase of regional diplomacy.
He further indicated a desire to visit Pakistan in the near future, signaling continued interest in strengthening bilateral engagement between the two countries.
The comments come at a time of heightened geopolitical sensitivity in the Middle East, where diplomatic efforts involving multiple intermediaries have been ongoing alongside broader regional security concerns.
