BAKU: Maryam Nawaz Sharif attended the World Urban Forum in Azerbaijan, joining global policymakers, urban planners and development experts at a gathering focused on the future of sustainable cities, housing, and urban governance.
The forum, organized under the auspices of the United Nations Human Settlements Program, brought together delegates from across the world to discuss rapidly evolving challenges facing urban centers, including population growth, climate resilience, infrastructure pressures and equitable access to housing. The event has long been regarded as one of the most significant international platforms for shaping urban development policy and exchanging best practices between governments and institutions.
Maryam Nawaz’s participation placed Pakistan within a wider conversation on urban reform and city planning at a time when South Asian megacities are grappling with mounting pressure on transport systems, public services and environmental sustainability. Her presence was viewed as part of Pakistan’s broader diplomatic and development engagement with international forums dealing with governance and urban transformation.
During the proceedings in Azerbaijan, discussions centered on how cities could be made more inclusive and resilient, particularly in the face of climate-related risks and uneven development. Delegates also examined financing models for urban infrastructure, the role of technology in city management, and the importance of coordinated policy frameworks between national and local governments.
The World Urban Forum has increasingly served as a platform where political leaders and technical experts converge to translate global development goals into practical urban strategies. This year’s edition continued that tradition, with strong emphasis placed on collaboration between developing and developed countries in addressing shared urban challenges.
