WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that efforts are under way to rapidly end what he described as a war with Iran, following a high-level security meeting at the White House.
According to US media reports, Trump convened an emergency session of his national security team in Washington, bringing together senior officials including the vice president, defence secretary, secretary of state and top military commanders to review military and diplomatic options.
The meeting reportedly examined a range of scenarios related to the conflict with Iran, including potential operational strategies as well as parallel diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Trump said there had been “positive progress” on the Iran issue and indicated that this would allow the United States to move quickly toward ending the conflict. He reiterated that Iran would not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons.
Trump further claimed that Iran’s military capabilities and leadership had been significantly degraded, adding that Washington remained committed to preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear arms under any circumstances.
Earlier, during an unrelated visit to a construction site for the White House ballroom, Trump warned that if Iran obtained nuclear weapons it could target Israel, stressing that such a scenario could not be allowed to materialise.
He also suggested that military action could still be on the table, saying that any future strikes would depend on developments in the coming days, though he emphasised that the overall objective was to bring the conflict to a swift conclusion.
