AHMEDABAD: The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has approved several recommendations during its board meetings held in Ahmedabad, India, including the trial use of the pink ball in Test cricket.
According to an official statement, the ICC Board endorsed a number of proposals put forward by the Chief Executives’ Committee during its meetings. Among the key decisions was the approval of a trial allowing the use of the pink ball in Test matches, provided both participating teams agree to its use.
The ICC said the move is aimed at reducing interruptions caused by poor light and ensuring that as much play as possible can be completed during Test matches. The use of the pink ball has previously been associated with day-night Tests, where its visibility under artificial lighting is considered superior to that of the traditional red ball.
Cricket administrators believe the measure could help minimise lost playing time and improve the overall flow of Test cricket, particularly in conditions where fading natural light often forces early stoppages.
The decision forms part of the ICC’s broader efforts to explore practical solutions that enhance the playing experience while maintaining the traditional format of the game. Further assessments are expected following the trial period before any long-term decision is taken on wider implementation.
