KARACHI: Doctors at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi held a peaceful protest outside the outpatient department complex to express solidarity with doctors in Balochistan and to condemn a recent attack on a healthcare professional in Quetta.
The protest was attended by senior representatives of the Young Doctors Association (YDA), including Omer Sultan, Sajjad Bughio and Kanwal Soomro, along with members of the YDA JPMC cabinet and a large number of hospital doctors.
Participants expressed concern over what they described as growing incidents of violence against medical professionals, stating that such attacks were unacceptable and undermined the healthcare system. They stressed that doctors and healthcare workers should be able to perform their duties in a safe and secure environment without fear or intimidation.
The protesting doctors called for enhanced security arrangements at healthcare facilities across the country, along with stronger legal protections and more effective preventive measures to deter future incidents. They said the safety of medical staff was essential not only for their own protection but also for the continuity of patient care.
Speakers at the gathering reiterated that the medical community stood in solidarity with their colleagues in Balochistan, particularly in light of the recent incident in Quetta. They urged authorities to take immediate and concrete steps to ensure accountability and to prevent recurrence of such attacks.
The protest remained peaceful throughout and concluded with a renewed pledge by the participants to continue raising their voice for the protection of healthcare professionals nationwide.
