WASHINGTON: Prominent American journalist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof has publicly praised Pakistan’s political and military leadership for their role in recent diplomatic efforts linked to the Iran–US dialogue.
Kristof reshared a social media statement by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, describing its tone and substance as noteworthy, and highlighting what he portrayed as Pakistan’s constructive engagement in a sensitive regional process. In his comments, Kristof said the United States, Israel, and Iran had all made “mistakes” during the broader conflict, arguing that diplomatic opportunities had repeatedly been missed.
He added that Pakistan’s mediation efforts were particularly commendable, crediting Islamabad for maintaining consistent engagement with parties holding sharply divergent positions and supporting efforts to reduce tensions.
The journalist also extended praise to Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying both civilian and military leadership in Pakistan deserved recognition for their roles in facilitating dialogue.
The post shared by Kristof referred to comments attributed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif suggesting that a proposed Iran–US understanding was closer than before, with expectations that a formal agreement could be finalised within 24 hours. According to the statement, preparations were also underway for an electronic signing process, followed by technical-level discussions scheduled for next week.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude for what he described as continued support from regional partners and participating states, saying sustained engagement and dialogue had created conditions for a potential breakthrough. He added that, if concluded, the agreement could provide a foundation for long-term stability, cooperation, and reduced tensions across the region.
