PARIS: US President Donald Trump said the memorandum of understanding with Iran was not a final agreement and warned that the United States could resume military strikes if the final deal proved unacceptable.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump said no American investment would be made in Iran. He said the Strait of Hormuz would fully reopen once an agreement was finalised and repeated that Iran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Trump described the proposed arrangement as a significant breakthrough.
The US president said financial markets had responded positively, with stock markets rising and oil prices falling. He argued that without the agreement, the global economy would have faced greater pressure. Trump said he would also discuss trade and the disputed Nile dam project with the Egyptian president, adding that the United States would assist Egypt with the project.
He dismissed reports claiming the agreement involved a $300 billion fund for Iran, saying the United States was not investing in the country. He also said he had discussed Hezbollah with Syria’s leadership. Trump added that the current memorandum did not include immediate sanctions relief for Iran, saying any decision on easing sanctions would be considered later.
President Sisi congratulated Trump on what he described as a breakthrough towards peace in the Middle East and said he looked forward to the conclusion of a final agreement.
