SUKKUR: The WWF Pakistan has organized a consultative meeting titled ‘Preparation of Report Card for Indus River Health Assessment’ in Sukkur. The meeting was attended by WWF Pakistan’s Director Freshwater Program Sohail Ali Naqvi, Senior Manager Wildlife Humaira Aisha, Coordinator for the Indus River Dolphin Imran Malik, and other stakeholders from various sectors. Alexandra, a water expert from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, USA, participated online and provided insights into the health of the Indus River, while seeking suggestions from participants.
During the meeting, Director Freshwater Program Sohail Naqvi explained that the purpose of the consultative meeting was to assess the threats and issues being faced by the Indus River, and to find solutions to prepare a report card. He said the WWF Pakistan was working in collaboration with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to evaluate the health of the Indus River’s water by engaging with all stakeholders. Dr Sohail emphasized that the pollution from urban and industrial wastewater endangered the rare Indus dolphin and caused various diseases in humans, animals, and birds as well.
The meeting was attended by Executive Engineer Sukkur Barrage Zahid Hussain, Executive Engineer Civil Irrigation Abdul Fatah Memon, Environmental Expert Farooq Ahmed, Director of Fisheries Arbab Ali Solangi, Manager at Engro Fertilizer Aoun Muhammad, Engro Foundation Dr. Sadoro PDM, Conservator of Forests Iftikhar Ahmed Arain, Prof. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Prof. Tariq Lashari, Prof. Sajid Ali Mirani, Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, and other officials from various departments, and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
