SAO PAULO: A tragic plane crash occurred in Vinhedo, Brazil, on Friday, involving an ATR-72 aircraft operated by Voepass Linhas Aéreas. The plane, which was en route from Cascavel in the state of Paraná to Guarulhos in São Paulo, reportedly had 62 people on board, including 58 passengers and 4 crew members.
Local TV station GloboNews reported that the plane went down in a residential area of Vinhedo, causing significant damage. Sao Paulo’s state fire brigade confirmed the incident on social media, announcing that seven crews were dispatched to the crash site. Initial videos shared on social media depicted the plane plummeting into a cluster of trees, followed by a large plume of black smoke. Subsequent reports and images indicated that the aircraft struck multiple houses, resulting in widespread devastation.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his concern over the incident, suggesting that all passengers and crew on board may have perished. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), he called for a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims. “I would like everyone to stand up so that we can observe a minute of silence because a plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in São Paulo, with 58 passengers and 4 crew members and it appears they all died,” Lula da Silva said.
According to Flightradar24 data, the Voepass flight lost signal shortly before 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. ET). As of now, there has been no official confirmation of the cause of the crash or the current status of the passengers and crew. Dramatic footage circulating on social media shows the plane spiraling out of control before crashing and subsequently being engulfed in flames. Authorities are continuing rescue operations and assessing the extent of the damage. The focus remains on determining the exact cause of the crash and providing assistance to those affected by the incident.
