KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Dr Farooq Sattar had called for the creation of additional provinces, saying Pakistan needed a more inclusive federal structure to ensure wider political representation and better governance.
Speaking after arriving at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters in Karachi, Sattar said the country could no longer continue to be governed through what he described as the influence of four provinces and a limited number of political families. He argued that increasing the number of provinces would help address administrative challenges and provide people with greater participation in decision-making.
Sattar said MQM-P would continue its campaign for the creation of new provinces until the objective was achieved. He maintained that a stronger federation required a system where regions had adequate representation and resources to address local issues effectively.
The demand for new provinces has remained a longstanding debate in Pakistan, with political parties and regional groups calling for administrative restructuring to improve governance and bring state institutions closer to citizens. Supporters of the proposal argue that smaller administrative units can improve service delivery, while opponents have raised concerns over political and economic implications.
During his remarks, Sattar also praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the people of Pakistan, saying they had shown resilience and courage during difficult circumstances.
His statement came as discussions over administrative reforms and the creation of new provinces continued to gain attention among political parties across the country. Several parties have recently expressed support for revisiting the structure of governance, though any move towards creating new provinces would require broad political consensus and constitutional procedures.
