ISLAMABAD: Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal directed authorities to prepare proposals for fiscal reforms and speed up development projects in Gilgit-Baltistan, stressing the need for better financial planning and improved governance in the region.
He issued the directives while chairing a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Review Committee in Islamabad, where officials reviewed progress on development initiatives and financial arrangements for Gilgit-Baltistan.
The minister endorsed the development of an NFC-based financial framework for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying a structured mechanism was essential to address the development requirements of the regions.
Ahsan Iqbal emphasized that ongoing projects should be completed within the given timelines to maximize the impact of public investment. He called for practical proposals aimed at strengthening fiscal management and supporting long-term development priorities.
The meeting also discussed measures to improve coordination among relevant institutions and ensure effective implementation of development schemes.
The planning minister said stronger financial planning and institutional reforms would help create new opportunities for economic growth and public welfare in Gilgit-Baltistan. He stressed that efficient resource allocation was necessary to meet the region’s development needs.
The government has been working on establishing a more sustainable framework for financial distribution and development planning for areas with distinct administrative and economic challenges.
Officials said the proposed NFC-based arrangement would provide a more effective financial structure for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, supporting inclusive development and improved service delivery.
