KARACHI: A 150-acre auto zone was planned at Port Qasim to create new export opportunities for Pakistan’s automotive industry and strengthen links between vehicle-related businesses, port infrastructure and regional markets, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Port Qasim Authority Board in Karachi, chaired by the federal minister. The meeting reviewed matters relating to the development and operations of the port and discussed ways to use its infrastructure to support industrial activity and expand the country’s trade capacity.
Chaudhry said the proposed auto zone would provide an integrated framework for vehicle imports, refurbishment and exports. It would include dedicated facilities for vehicle refurbishment, display and spare parts.
The project was also expected to support a wider range of automotive activities and attract investment linked to the maritime and manufacturing sectors.
The minister said the proposed zone had the potential to generate about $200 million in annual foreign exchange earnings. Once fully developed, annual exports from the project were projected to reach about $500 million.
The proposed development would provide a dedicated platform for companies involved in vehicle imports, refurbishment, spare parts and exports. It was expected to encourage greater commercial activity around Port Qasim while creating opportunities for manufacturers, traders and service providers.
The government sees greater use of port infrastructure as an important part of expanding industrial and export activity. The minister stressed that Port Qasim and other maritime facilities needed to play a larger role in supporting manufacturing, trade and investment.
