TEHRAN: Iran has condemned Australia’s decision to place its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on a list of state sponsors of terrorism, calling the move “unjustified and insulting.”
In a statement from Tehran, the Iranian foreign ministry described Australia’s action as “irresponsible” and linked it to what it said were “false and fabricated allegations” propagated by Israeli security agencies. The statement suggested that the listing mirrored previous mistakes made by Canberra in accepting claims without verification.
The move follows accusations in August that Iran was responsible for anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne, which led to the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador from Australia. Iranian officials argued that the listing of the IRGC was politically motivated and lacked a factual basis, further straining already tense relations between the two countries.
The decision is likely to intensify diplomatic tensions as both sides navigate disputes over regional security and accusations of foreign interference.
