ISLAMABAD: Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam, has said that Pakistan is actively working to promote dialogue between US and Iran and is keen to prevent any military or coercive action, as tensions continue to simmer in the region.
Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad, the ambassador said there was sustained high-level contact between Iran and Pakistan. He praised Islamabad’s role, saying Pakistan had played a sincere and constructive part in efforts to de-escalate tensions. Iran, he added, had appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, warning that any further escalation could cause serious harm to the wider region.
Dr Moghadam said Iran did not want new tensions in the region and was closely monitoring developments. He made it clear that US demands were unacceptable to Tehran. Rejecting claims by US president Donald Trump that negotiations with Iran were under way, the ambassador described such statements as contrary to ground realities. He said recent remarks by Trump suggesting Iran’s willingness to negotiate were “baseless and misleading”, adding that Tehran had formally rejected those claims.
According to the ambassador, the US was using the narrative of talks for domestic political purposes while trying to project an image of diplomacy to the international community. Iran, he said, had made its position clear that these claims did not reflect reality.
