KARACHI: Chairman Gerontologist and Geriatrics Department Ibni Sina Institute, Istanbul, Dr Kemal Aydin on Friday unveiled a strategy aimed at reshaping how the society could support an ageing population at press conference in Karachi setting out a vision for the next decade for Asia-Pacific region.
Speaking at a press conference, gerontologist and geriatrics specialist Dr Kemal Aydın said the Age Friendly Pakistan 2026–2035 strategy marked a turning point in how the country viewed ageing, health and social care.
The event was hosted by Daily Metro Morning that brought together government officials, health professionals, researchers, members civil society and media representatives. During the event, Dr Kemal of Ibni Sina Institute and Ehtasham Anwar of Metro Morning signed an MoU for collaboration between two entities.
Editor Metro Morning Ehtasham Anwar said Pakistan would work with international bodies such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations to adopt evidence-based ageing policies aligned with global standards. He said the forum represented the first comprehensive national effort to address ageing in Pakistan in a structured and sustainable way.
Speaking on the occasion, renowned cardiologist Dr Akram Sultan said such strategy could improve health and wellbeing across all age groups, while making cities safer and more accessible for older adults. It also sought to enhance both the quality and length of life through coordinated health, social and economic support.
Dr Aydın said the strategy focused on health, longevity, urban design and social support systems, areas long neglected in public policy. He said the initiative drew on global experience while responding to Pakistan’s own demographic realities.
