CANBERRA: Australia has announced it will close its embassy in Afghanistan, citing the Taliban regime’s violent and undemocratic policies that have left the country increasingly isolated on the world stage.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the embassy will cease operations after June 2026, and it will not accept any representatives, including diplomats or honorary consuls, appointed by the Taliban.
According to Australian media, the government has refused to recognize the Taliban as legitimate representatives of the Afghan people. Officials have strongly condemned the regime’s human rights abuses and restrictions on dissent.
The Refugee Council of Australia has also highlighted fears among Afghan civilians, who are reportedly reluctant to seek documents or interact with institutions under Taliban control.
