ISLAMABAD: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved four major development projects worth more than 240 billion rupees during a meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday, with Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar presiding. The approvals signal a renewed focus on infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and skills development across the country.
Among the sanctioned projects is the expansion of the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology–National Institute of Heart Diseases (AFIC-NIHD) in Rawalpindi, aimed at improving healthcare facilities and access to advanced cardiac care for patients in the region. The project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the public health sector and addressing growing demands for specialized medical services.
The committee also approved the continuation of the Prime Minister’s Youth Skill Development Program, designed to equip young Pakistanis with vocational and technical skills, enhancing employment opportunities and addressing the challenges of youth unemployment. Officials noted that the program has already shown significant results in training and job placement, and the new phase will broaden its reach.
In the transport sector, ECNEC approved the Karachi Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor, a key urban transport initiative expected to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and modernize public transport infrastructure in Pakistan’s largest city. Finally, the committee sanctioned the 34.5 MW Harpo Hydropower Project in Gilgit-Baltistan, which will contribute to renewable energy generation and support regional development.
