KARACHI: A women’s convention organized by the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) drew a large turnout in Karachi’s Central district on Saturday, including a significant number of university students.
Addressing the gathering, party chairman Afaq Ahmed reiterated his party’s opposition to the division of Karachi and the Mohajir community, describing recent calls for a separate province as the agenda of what he termed the “Punjab establishment,” backed by those in power through Form 47.
Ahmed said his party’s position was clear: it would not allow the Mohajir people or their land to be divided. He described Karachi and the Mohajir community as facing a third attempt at division—the first, he said, came at the creation of Pakistan, and the second in 1971 with the fall of Dhaka.
Afaq Ahmed added that the party supported the creation of a southern Sindh province based on urban Sindh, but stressed that the community could not be sacrificed for political maneuvering. “The province and the federation are two sides of the same coin,” he said, arguing that a sincere federal government would have fully recognized Mohajirs in the census to ensure their fair share of resources and rights.
The convention highlighted the party’s focus on community unity, political rights, and social engagement, with organizers calling on citizens, particularly women and youth, to actively participate in safeguarding the Mohajir community’s interests and contributing to the region’s development.
