KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Monem Zafar on Saturday announced that protests would be held at 10 locations across the city on Sunday, after police used force to prevent party workers from staging a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly.
The religio-political party had planned the demonstration under its “Jeenay Do Karachi Ko” (Let Karachi Live) campaign, calling for urgent action on the city’s damaged roads, drainage system, and local government issues. Zafar’s statement followed a police response in which teargas shells were fired and baton charges used to disperse JI workers.
Speaking at a press conference, Zafar said the protest had been launched to demand Karachi’s rights. He described the police action as the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) “fascist behavior” in the city. He criticized the administration for arresting several workers and firing teargas at peaceful citizens.
Zafar also alleged that expired teargas shells from 2022 and 2023 were used against the demonstrators. He demanded that provincial authorities explain why Karachi had become, in his words, a “no-go area.” He instructed party workers to disperse for the time being but announced plans for sit-ins at 10 locations across the city on Sunday.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said the police and local administration had advised JI to hold a peaceful protest and warned the party not to enter the Red Zone. He said JI workers violated Section 144 and pelted police with stones after entering the restricted area.
