ISLAMABAD: Jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, over alleged denial of medical and legal access for party founder Imran Khan. The leaders urged the Supreme Court to ensure Khan receives proper treatment while in custody.
In a letter sent through their lawyer, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mahmood-ur-Rashid stated that the former prime minister has been repeatedly denied access to his personal doctor, family members, and legal counsel. The appeal follows Khan’s second eye injection at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, where he is being treated for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a condition that has caused around 85 per cent vision loss in his right eye.
The PTI leaders compared Khan’s treatment with that of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2019, highlighting that Sharif had unrestricted access to his personal doctor, family, and lawyers at Lahore’s Services Hospital and was later allowed to travel abroad for heart treatment. The letter accused the current government of “cloak-and-dagger” tactics, initially denying Khan’s illness before making public statements following his CRVO diagnosis.
The appeal underscores growing concerns over the health and legal rights of imprisoned political leaders and calls for judicial intervention to protect Khan’s access to essential medical care.
