ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the summary recommending the cancellation of the Pakistan Day parade and all associated ceremonies, according to details issued by the President’s House. The decision has been taken in the context of the Gulf oil crisis and government austerity measures, with the president acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In his remarks regarding the approval, President Zardari emphasized that careful and responsible utilization of national resources is the duty of every citizen. The move reflects the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline amid challenging economic circumstances, with funds that would have been allocated for the celebrations to be redirected toward more pressing national needs.
According to the official notification, the investiture ceremony for national awards, traditionally held on March 23, will now take place on April 28, 2026. This postponement ensures that recognition of distinguished citizens continues while respecting the broader austerity drive.
The cancellation marks a significant departure from tradition, as the Pakistan Day parade has long been a centerpiece of national celebrations, showcasing military capabilities, cultural diversity, and patriotic spirit. Officials indicated that the decision was made after careful consideration of the current economic situation and regional developments, prioritizing prudent financial management over ceremonial expenditures.
