Experts and policymakers gathered at Karachi’s ICCBS for the COMSTECH–PCMD course, promoting regional collaboration and scientific preparedness for future pandemics

    By our correspondent

KARACHI: Leading scientists, health experts, and policymakers gathered at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, for the inaugural session of the COMSTECH–PCMD International Course on Pandemic Preparedness, aimed at strengthening capacities among OIC countries.

The event featured prominent speakers, including Professor Nazli Hussain, Vice-Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences; Professor Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, OIC; Jamshid Memon, Special Secretary of the Sindh Health Department; Professor Tariq, Vice Dean of Medicine at Aga Khan University; and Professor Saeed Hoda of Ojha Central Laboratory.

During the opening session, the experts stressed the urgent need for joint strategies, scientific collaboration, and institutional capacity-building to confront future pandemics. They highlighted that lessons from COVID-19 should guide the development of sustainable early-warning systems, diagnostics, and coordinated response frameworks across member states.

Professor Choudhary noted that the COMSTECH–PCMD initiative seeks to enhance scientific readiness and public health resilience through research-based training and regional cooperation, providing a platform for knowledge and technology exchange between nations with diverse health system capacities.

Professor Hussain underlined Pakistan’s experience in managing large-scale health emergencies, praising ICCBS for its ongoing role in scientific innovation and international collaboration. Jamshid Memon affirmed that the Sindh Health Department would continue supporting efforts to strengthen preparedness against infectious disease threats.
