KARACHI: A factory allegedly involved in producing substandard oil from the bones and fat of dead animals was sealed during a raid in Bhains Colony by the Sindh Food Authority on the directives of Sindh Minister for Food Makhdoom Mehboob Uz Zaman, officials said on Saturday.
During the operation, authorities recovered a large quantity of animal fat, raw materials and equipment used in the production process. Officials said the unit was operating illegally and was posing a serious threat to public health.
The Sindh Food Authority said suspects present at the site were arrested and legal proceedings were initiated against them. An FIR, numbered 356/2026, was registered at Sukhan Police Station on the complaint of the authority.
Minister for Food Makhdoom Mehboob Uz Zaman said that the factory was engaged in the preparation of oil and ghee using fat derived from dead animals, describing the practice as extremely harmful to human health. He said such activities endangered public lives for financial gain and would not be tolerated.
He added that strict action had been taken in the case and reiterated that there would be no leniency for those involved in the production or sale of hazardous food items. He said protecting public health remained the top priority of the provincial government.
The minister directed the Sindh Food Authority to further intensify its crackdown against illegal, substandard and unsafe food production units across the province.
He said that those involved in “selling poison in the name of food” would not escape the law and warned that enforcement actions would continue without discrimination.
Officials said samples of the seized material had been sent for laboratory analysis, while further investigations were under way.
Authorities reaffirmed that operations against unsafe food production units would continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure food safety and protect consumers across Sindh.
