KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munem Zafar Khan has criticized the city’s electricity, water and civic infrastructure, accusing the authorities of failing to address long-standing public concerns.
Speaking at a press conference, Khan said around 200 K-Electric feeders tripped as soon as the first rainfall began a day earlier. He claimed the utility had received Rs163 billion in subsidies to improve Karachi’s power supply, but alleged that neither electricity generation nor the transmission system had seen meaningful improvement.
Munem also criticized the Sindh government, describing it as ineffective and alleging that residents continue to face poor roads, inadequate public services and severe water shortages. He said 19 people died last year after falling into uncovered drains and questioned why the city administration had failed to install protective covers despite being under the control of the Pakistan People’s Party.
Munem Zafar further alleged that Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab had not adequately involved town chairmen in civic planning. He claimed Rs530 million had been allocated for drain cleaning but said the work, which should continue throughout the year, typically begins only a few days before the monsoon season.
Referring to healthcare, Khan alleged that the number of children diagnosed with HIV at Walika Hospital had reached 95 and claimed that reused syringes were contributing to infections. He said nine children had died and called on the Sindh government to respond to the allegations.
On the city’s water supply, Khan said around half of the population living along Karachi’s coastline continues to face water shortages. He also claimed that work on the K-IV water supply project had been affected after the World Bank halted augmentation-related work.
Khan further criticized delays to infrastructure projects, including the water pipeline from NIPA to Hassan Square and ongoing work on University Road. He alleged that several development projects had become a source of corruption and accused both the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement of facilitating the situation.
