ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert across Pakistan as a strong weather system brings warnings of heavy rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms over the next three days. Authorities have advised citizens to take precautionary measures amid possible flooding risks.
According to reports, the weather system entered the country and is expected to remain active until May 5, bringing intense rainfall, stormy conditions and hailstorms to several regions. The NDMA said the situation could further intensify in the coming days.
Rain is expected in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. In Punjab, areas including Murree, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sialkot and Faisalabad are likely to experience rain and thunderstorms. Cloud activity is also expected across multiple districts of KP, GB and Azad Kashmir, with warnings of possible hailstorms in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Strong winds and thunderstorms may accompany rainfall, increasing the risk of damage in several areas. Authorities have also raised concerns over glacial melt in northern regions, which could trigger glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Heavy rain may lead to flooding in rivers and canals, while landslides in mountainous areas could block roads and disrupt transport.
Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the alert period and take precautions to protect livestock and valuables. The NDMA has urged the public to follow instructions from local administrations to ensure safety.
