ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert warning of rainfall, possible glacial lake outburst floods and an intense heatwave expected to affect multiple regions of Pakistan in the coming days.
According to details issued on Monday, rain and hailstorms are likely in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan over the next 24 hours.
Authorities also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, raising concerns over localised disruptions.
The NDMA warned that glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) incidents may occur in northern regions between May 11 and May 17, 2026.
It advised residents and tourists in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel near glacial zones.Separately, the authority issued a heatwave alert from Tuesday until May 18, warning that severe heat conditions are likely to persist for three to five days in southern and central parts of the country.
Lower Sindh, southern Punjab and eastern Balochistan are expected to be the worst affected regions. The NDMA said Karachi and other parts of Sindh may also experience harsh weather conditions, while temperatures are expected to rise abnormally in several districts of Balochistan.
Officials warned that the heatwave could increase heatstroke cases, strain electricity demand and worsen water shortages. The authority has directed relevant departments to activate heatwave response plans, set up cooling centres and ensure uninterrupted water supply for citizens.
