MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin warned US President Donald Trump of “catastrophic consequences” if military action is launched against Iran, according to Russian officials.
The warning came during a 90-minute phone call between the two leaders, in which they discussed tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to a Kremlin statement cited by Indian outlet NDTV, Putin expressed concern over the escalating situation in Iran and the Gulf region, cautioning that any renewed US or Israeli strikes could have devastating global repercussions.
Putin described the extension of the ceasefire with Iran as a positive step, saying it could open space for diplomacy and help stabilise the region. He also assured support for ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2022. Russian officials said Putin claimed his forces currently hold the advantage on the battlefield.
Reports added that Putin had proposed a ceasefire during 9 May commemorations marking the Soviet victory in the World War II, a move said to have been backed by Trump.
Russia traditionally marks 9 May with a military parade, though this year’s event is expected to be scaled down due to security concerns.
