BEIJING: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly arrived in Beijing despite previously imposed Chinese entry restrictions, after what has been described as a diplomatic workaround involving changes in official transliteration of his name.
According to international media reports, including Al Jazeera, Chinese authorities listed Rubio under a modified version of his name, recorded as “Marco Lu” in official documents. This adjustment allegedly allowed Beijing to maintain sanctions on paper while still permitting his entry for high-level diplomatic engagement.
Reports said the change was made by altering the phonetic rendering of his surname into a different Chinese character, effectively creating a separate official spelling for administrative use.
China had imposed sanctions on Rubio during his time as a US senator over his past statements and actions related to Beijing. Those restrictions remained in place even after he assumed the role of US Secretary of State in January 2025.
Chinese foreign ministry officials had earlier suggested that sanctions could be eased if Rubio attended a summit alongside US President Donald Trump in Beijing. Officials previously stated that the measures were linked to Rubio’s remarks during his Senate tenure.
The development highlights the complex diplomatic balancing between maintaining political restrictions and enabling high-level engagement between the two countries.
