KARACHI: The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Karachi had hosted a vibrant celebration of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, bringing together members of the Thai community, Pakistani business partners, diplomats and distinguished guests to experience the country’s cultural traditions.

Songkran marks the beginning of the traditional Thai calendar and is celebrated across Thailand with water festivities, family gatherings and acts of respect. The water is seen as a symbol of washing away misfortunes and welcoming a fresh start filled with happiness and prosperity.
The Consul-General of Thailand in Karachi, H.E. Mr Surashete Boontinand, along with Mrs Sriprapai Boontinand, had presided over the celebration. In his address, he had spoken about the deeper meaning of Songkran beyond the festive water play, highlighting family unity, renewal and respect for elders. He had then led the traditional water pouring ceremony, in which guests gently poured scented water over the hands of elders as a gesture of reverence and to seek blessings for the new year.
The event had also been attended by Mr Chotirat Komaradat and Mr Halim Wainalai, consuls, along with consulate staff who had warmly welcomed guests, particularly children.
The celebration featured Thai cultural performances showcasing traditional dance and music, while guests also participated in Thai games, adding to the festive atmosphere. The poolside venue at Avari Towers, decorated in colourful Thai style, had provided a backdrop for an evening of cultural exchange and camaraderie.
The event had underscored the strong cultural ties between Thailand and Pakistan and highlighted how shared celebrations can help build lasting people-to-people connections. Through Songkran, the consulate had continued its efforts to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.
