ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump has once again expressed confidence in Pakistan’s role as a mediator between Iran and the United States, praising Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their diplomatic efforts.
Trump said Pakistan played an important role in the recent Iran ceasefire and added that the country’s leadership is doing “excellent” work in handling sensitive regional diplomacy.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, US Senator Lindsey Graham had earlier criticized Pakistan, saying that if Iran was securing its military assets on Pakistani bases, then Islamabad could not remain a neutral mediator and that he had “no trust at all” in Pakistan.
The remarks came after some US media outlets claimed that Pakistan had allowed Iranian military aircraft and assets to be stationed at its airbases to protect them from possible US or Israeli strikes.
Pakistan, however, rejected the CBS News report, calling it misleading and sensationalist.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said such speculative narratives were aimed at undermining ongoing efforts for regional stability and peace.
He added that during the initial phase of talks, several Iranian and US aircraft arrived in Pakistan to facilitate the movement of diplomatic staff, security teams, and administrative personnel involved in the negotiation process.
The spokesperson further stated that some aircraft and support personnel remained temporarily in Pakistan due to scheduled diplomatic visits, while high-level engagements between the two sides continued despite stalled formal negotiations.
He also said Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit to Islamabad was facilitated through existing logistical and administrative arrangements.
The Foreign Office clarified that the Iranian aircraft currently present in Pakistan arrived during the ceasefire period and had no link to any military emergency or security arrangement.
It rejected all contrary claims as baseless, misleading, and contrary to facts, reiterating that Pakistan has always played a neutral, constructive, and responsible facilitation role in regional diplomacy and will continue supporting peace and de-escalation efforts globally.
Lindsey Graham is known for his hardline stance on Iran and has frequently urged stronger US policy against Tehran.
Meanwhile, Pakistan continues efforts to revive stalled diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States, although progress remains uncertain amid new conditions set by Tehran.
