WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that the United States does not want what he described as a “toll tax” in the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing tensions surrounding one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Donald Trump said talks with Iran were currently underway, framing the diplomatic channel as still active despite broader regional strains.
He said Washington’s position remained unchanged on Iran’s nuclear programme, insisting that Tehran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. He also claimed the US would seek to seize Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, without providing further details.
Trump further said the US Navy was “doing a good job” and suggested that no vessels were currently able to reach Iran, adding that a form of blockade meant the United States was effectively maintaining control over maritime movement in the region.
