ABU DHABI: India and the United Arab Emirates have agreed a new framework on defence cooperation, marking a significant step in deepening strategic ties between the two countries alongside broader investment commitments.
The agreement was finalized during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Abu Dhabi, where he held talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The visit formed part of a wider multi-country tour, with the UAE as the first stop.
Under the new defence partnership framework, both sides are expected to expand collaboration in areas including advanced defence technology, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism cooperation. Officials described the agreement as part of a broader effort to strengthen long-term strategic alignment.
During the meeting in Abu Dhabi, Modi said India was prepared to support efforts to promote stability and peace in West Asia. He also condemned recent attacks on the UAE, expressing solidarity with the country’s leadership and people.
The Emirati president and the Indian prime minister also discussed regional security developments and the importance of maintaining stability amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The UAE leadership has faced security challenges during periods of regional conflict, including incidents linked to wider Iran-related tensions, given its strategic position and the presence of major international military infrastructure in the country.
Alongside defence cooperation, both sides are also expected to expand economic engagement, with investment flows and trade partnerships forming a key pillar of the bilateral relationship, which has grown significantly in recent years.
