BEIJING: The United States and China have agreed that no country should be allowed to impose taxes on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US State Department official cited by Reuters.
The statement came at a time when US President Donald Trump is on a two-day visit to Beijing and is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping within hours.
According to international media reports, the high-level meeting is also expected to include key discussions on the situation involving Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for global energy supplies, and any move to impose taxes or restrictions has raised concerns among major economies.
The agreement between Washington and Beijing is being seen as a significant development aimed at ensuring free navigation and stability in the region amid rising geopolitical tensions.
