MICHIGAN: A violent incident unfolded on Thursday at Temple Israel, a large Reform Jewish synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, when a man deliberately drove a vehicle into the building and was later found dead at the scene. The attack occurred around midday, shortly after 12:19 p.m. local time, while staff and children were present in an early childhood centre that serves about 140 young pupils.
According to law enforcement, the driver crashed a pickup truck through the main entrance and into a hallway of the synagogue. The vehicle burst into flames after something inside it ignited, complicating the scene for first responders. Security personnel at the temple, many of whom had been trained for such emergencies, confronted the assailant with gunfire. The suspect was later found dead inside the burning vehicle, though investigators have not yet determined whether he died from the gunfire, self‑inflicted wounds, the fire, or other causes.
One armed security guard was struck by the vehicle and taken to hospital with injuries that officials described as non‑life‑threatening. No children or staff members inside the preschool or synagogue were reported hurt during the attack, and all were safely evacuated. Around 30 law enforcement officers and first responders were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Authorities identified the suspect as 41‑year‑old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalised U.S. citizen born in Lebanon who lived in the Detroit area. Federal officials said the FBI is investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, though a clear motive has not yet been established. Possible explosives were reportedly found in the vehicle, and bomb technicians were deployed to the site as a precaution.
Temple Israel is one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States, serving thousands of families and providing religious services, education and cultural activities. In the aftermath of the attack, local police briefly issued shelter‑in‑place orders and nearby schools activated security protocols before those were lifted later in the afternoon.
Political and community leaders reacted swiftly. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the violence and pledged a full investigation, expressing sympathy for those affected. Michigan’s Governor and other officials echoed calls for unity and protection for religious institutions. Several Jewish organisations and civil rights groups also condemned the attack, stressing the need to combat rising threats against faith communities.
The incident has heightened concerns about antisemitic violence in the United States, following an increase in recorded threats and attacks on Jewish communities and places of worship in recent years.
